Experience is a must - Use common sense before you go. by Al

To begin with I would like to advice those who have met a lady in China that they should not go to China with their Statutory Declaration in hand saying "I do".

This is madness, you should stop and consider your position first, secondly if your lady has said to get married on your first meeting, ask yourself Why?

You have not met face to face, you have exchanged emails and maybe seen each other on the web cam and spoken either on the phone or by Skype or some other voip program.

There are other factors to consider along with the above. If your lady is using a translator, can you trust the translator to tell you or your lady the truth. They may tell your lady that you have a string of shops which is a family business and that you own two houses to make you sound and look a better catch. If you are for instance a shelf stacker in Tesco, and you do not realise that the translator has been shall we say embroidering the truth about you then your lady will have a big shock when she eventually finds out the truth and then it will be to late.

So you have considered your position you have decided that you believe the translator is telling your lady what you have been writing in your emails and you are happy to carry on with your plans to visit your lady.

DO NOT start plans for your Statutory Declaration at this time. Make your mind up when you are going to travel and tell your lady the dates she can expect you.  Top

The most important thing you can decide with your lady is to buy an Electronic Translator, this will make the person who is translating for you obsolete while you are there, giving you both the privacy you need to get to know each other, and it will also allow you to tell her things that you have told her in emails. This will tell you if the translator has been honest with you both, if not you can tell the translator where to get off. The other reason for the electronic translator is that if you decide that this is the lady for you, you can leave the electronic translator with her so you can talk to each other on the Internet or phone, this will help her learn some English words.

So you have met and you both decide to get married, but this is where a cool head is required as you can get carried away on a tide of excitement. Make plans to go to China again leaving at least one month between visits as it may take you this long to arrange your Statutory Declaration, China Visa, Flights and holidays from work.

Only fools rush in...

Remember if you decide to arrange to marry at a later date and you both decide that you will live in the UK then the length of time you leave between your first visit and the time you are married provides evidence for your Settlement Visa Application. This will also strengthen your relationship or break it. If your lady is honest and truly wants to be with you she will wait for you.  Top

A comment from Mcrobski from the Forum

So true Al, sad but very true. And the numbers are much greater than the post's that appear on the forum, the westerners living in Nanning are there because they chose to live there and while friendly to all and sundry did not move there to rescue those that act before thinking.

Go on your first trip with an open mind and an open heart, treat it as a holiday visiting friends, if it progress's further then that is good, if it doesn't then file the experience away for next time.

A trick is for translator's to have the woman sign a contract for a personal loan or some such transaction (as it is illegal to broker a marriage with a foreigner) to make it all legal, you usually will find this out after your married.

For the few that are happy from a "meet today marry tomorrow" scenario there are a lot more that ends in heartache and embarrassment for both parties. If she is the one for you then she will wait until you come back a second time to get married.  Top
